The Face of Tanzania competition was initiated by BTA, first season was launched in November 2007 and climaxed in April 2008. The competition is created to;
- To launch Tanzanian supermodels who can work internationally and represent Tanzania in international fashion scenes.
- To elevate the Tanzanian fashion industry by setting international standards, creating international interactions and exposing local potentials to investors worldwide which will eventually provide employment to majority Tanzanians and create an industry that will have an economical impact in the country as a whole.
- Empower young women mentally through self awareness programs so that they can deal with issues like gender inequalities, HIV/AIDS and cultural restraining acts and be able to develop skills that will positively develop them economically and socially.

The competition, which was run as a TV series and hosted by Ms were Irene Kiwia and Miss World Africa 2005 Nancy Sumari, featured the models at boot camp being taught about different issues including HIV/AIDS awareness, self awareness and gender issues among others. This not only benefited the participants, but also the thousands of girl who were viewing the program. The theme, "Mimi ni kisura, Najitambua" has become a line used by different young women nationwide when making an emphasis on issues that undermine and compromise them.

The participants had a visit to South Africa and met international models, fashion designers and other agents that are in the fashion industry hence generated an interest in Tanzania that did not exist before, this will lead to interaction between the two countries which is a process in developing our fashion industry.

Majority of Tanzanians learn't a lot about the fashion industry through the series. This has created a lot of interest among people who are now aware of the opportunities that exist in the fashion industry which can lead to self initiations into job creations, and in due time a whole industry will emerge and increase opportunities for many hence play a major role towards the country's economic development.

The participants have been exposed to different opportunities. Many of them were just home, not working and not studying. But there has been job offers and education offers from organizations that supported the project. Definitely this changed the girl's lives for the better future.

The winner of the competition received a one year contract with Johannesburg based modeling agency where she is working now. This is a step towards putting Tanzania in the international fashion map.

To begin, we visited 8 regions in Tanzania which are Arusha, Mwanza, Manyara, Kigoma, Mtwara, Morogoro, Dodoma and Dar Es Salaam. We scouted a total of 16 girls who started model camp in early march2008.

At boot camp the models were trained on different areas like catwalk, fashion design, photo shoot, self awareness, HIV/AIDS, public relations, product advertising, hair and makeup, creativity development, social responsibility etc.

After each training they were tried, tested and judged, and three girls were put up for elimination, and two were voted out by the public until 10 girls only remained.

The top ten were put up for nomination, and run campaigns to ask the public to vote for them into the 5 finalists.

The public voted for the 5 finalists, who went to South Africa for a 5 days trip where they met with representatives from O model agency (the agency that will represent the winner) and other models represented by the agency, fashion designers etc.

During the trip they were given a seminar about the modeling industry, trained on catwalk, photography and got first hand experience on how an international supermodel works.
After the South Africa trip the finals were held in Dar Es Salaam Tanzania and the first Face of Tanzania winner Emmy Melau was crowned.

We had good outcome concerning the competition, such outcome are;
- The audience gained was more that anticipated. We had anticipated to reach to an age group between 16 years to 45 years, mostly women but in return we managed to reach a much older audience, male and female, from all social and economic status. Also during the one months voting period its is estimated that we received more than 34,000 votes.
- The show was a proudly Tanzanian project, as it promoted Tanzanian language, Tanzanian cultures, Tanzanian designers, Tanzanian models, eco-tourism etc.
- The competition empowered a lot of women, young and old, through the Mimi ni kisura, Najitambua theme hence fulfilled one of the main objectives of the project.
- The project opened a lot of opportunities for the participants like education offers, job offers etc. that will help the girls earn income live decently, and self progress.

Conclusively, the project was successful. We reached the targeted goals. The show maintained high standards and was nothing short of spectacular, both in terms of preparation and organization.
We are planning to launch season 2 in 2009 and commence the groundwork plan in early January 2009.
We expect to get a bigger response from the model wanna-be's, the audience, the sponsors and advertisers.
